WTB Podcasts, PST

Right, so I find myself in dire need of entertaining podcasts.

I’m a podcast n00b, so be gentle.

As Kwane so perfectly stated, “Podcasts are still like Bigfoot to me, I am sure they are out there, but not sure I want to know about them and they scare me a little.”

I’m looking primarily for entertainment value. It needs to engage my attention from the start, without long lulls of boring in the middle. It doesn’t have to be Warcraft related, but it does have to be easy to add to my iPod - huge preference for freebies I can subscribe to and get via iTunes.

Anything about writing, books, gaming, comedy, movies, cartoons, or just flat out fun stuff to listen to. I have a high swearing tolerance, but would prefer something that included a broader vocabulary than the average street corner conversation.

Hopefully I can find Twisted Nether that way - if not, it’s one of the very few I’m willing to try downloading and getting into my iPod the hard way.

Suggestions?

Help?

ExtraLife Radio (http://www.myextralife.com/?page_id=5954) is one of my favourites, and it covers just about everything you just mentioned… you really need to give it a listen! It’s a veryfunny panel show where they talk about various geeky things: tv shows, video games, movies, books, art, cartoon (all the panelists are cartoonists).

The Instance (http://theinstance.net) is a WoW related podcast done by the same guy who does ExtraLife. They are both worth giving a listen to!

I also listen to the WoW Insider Show, which is pretty good but can get a little dull at times.

I’d help, but podcasts are more like extra terrestrial life to me…I’m sure they exist, but damned if I know where…

I just started listening to the /Filmcast from /film. You can get it on Itunes. I’m already a big fan, they had a great episode about The Dark Knight with Kevin Smith as the guest, and another good episode featured Stephen Toblowsky (Heroes, also in Groundhog Day, the insurances salesman Ned). It’s a real good listen so far.

I’d agree that the Instance is a great WoW podcast as well. Also try Casually Hardcore.

  4. Shawndra Says:

A couple of good WoW podcasts I listen to are Elune’s Grace and Epic Dolls. As Brajana said, Extra Life and the Instance are very good, too. I like to listen to World of Warcast when they do a show. If you like console gaming and want to hear about the latest and greatest, I like to hear that news from the Married Gamers, as you get both a guys view and a girls view. For pure entertainment value, and not to put on my player, I watch Ask a Ninja over my hubby’s shoulder. Too fun!

    Feartheboot.com!

Best DnD podcast ever! It’s been a while since I’ve listened to them (like a year) but they were still going strong when I checked them out a few weeks ago. Very fun guys, pleasent to listen to for sure ^.^

  6. Ataris Says:

Try out “Warcraft Anonymous”, from chapter one. They’re available for download at wcradio.com. It’s turned my daily conmute into something l look forward too (car radio with USB input FTW!)

  7. Daeus Says:

    I wholeheartedly recommend “The Instance”.

    http://www.myextralife.com/?page_id=5954

It’s about a once a week thing, and the guy also does one regarding just general geek news and whatnot, on the same website.

  8. Daeus Says:

Oh wow. Okay, I hadn’t seen the comment above when I posted mine. Sorry about the double recommendation!

For gaming podcasts, check out the Virgin Worlds Podcast Collective. There’s tons of interesting stuff there about WoW and other MMOs. I particularly like “Shut Up, We’re Talking,” “Witty Ranter,” “MMOG Nation,” and “Massively Speaking.” (I don’t play many of the other games they talk about, but I still enjoy hearing about them, and about the MMO industry, in general.)

For more WoW-related stuff, I’m also a huge fan of The Instance, and you should totally check out “How I WoW,” too. That’s one of my favorites! :)

I listen to 9 hours of podcasts a day, i really say 1ups pod casts and video casts are a step above the others, but IGN are by far the funniest.

my favorite WoW podcasts are Outlandish and 1ups legendary thread

my faVorite gaming podcast is IGN Gamescoop/beyond/3 red lights, Giantbomb cast, and anything from 1up

  11. Lassirra Says:

I wholeheartedly agree with those posting in support of The Instance. It’s a great podcast, and one of only a couple that I follow regularly. It’s both entertaining and informative, and the voices of the hosts are actually pleasant to listen to.

  12. Overcast Says:

@Ataris: “Car radio with USB input FTW!”

    Oh yes, indeed.

  13. Revaan Says:

I recommend “Bob and the Showgram”, it’s a morning radio show from NC and is freaking hilarious. And best of all, the podcast means all the commercials are cut. Each episode is about 2 and half hours long, so it should help.

  14. Typhoonandrew Says:

    My list:
Analog Hole Gaming (tech, wow, games, goss), Combobulater, D&D podcast, Extralife, How I wow, The Instance, Legendary Thread, Massively, Outlandish, Project Lore, TalkCrunch, Twisted Nether, Virgin World, Witty Ranter, World of Warcast, WoW radio.

And my Mini has an Aux-input that means the podcast goodness comes through the regular car sound system. Driving with podcasts is pure joy.

  15. Gonzar Says:

Since WoW seems to be pretty well covered, I’d recommend Radio Labs which can be found on iTunes. It’s an NPR show by WNYC that covers many different subjects from a scientific perspective. It is done very well and is always entertaining. And since it’s from NPR it will satisfy the “broader vocabulary than the average street corner conversation” criteria.

  16. Overcast Says:

Found some decent ones at Tankspot.com too - although, they are primarily about tanking, of course… :)

But there’s a variety of subjects.

  17. Zeb Says:

Neither are WoW or gaming related, but I’m a big fan of This American Life, and The Bugle. I’d also suggest Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me.

  18. phil Says:

Filmspotting for movies. The hosts are very knowledgeable and its free on itunes. Very good quality show

  19. ObiChad Says:

WoW Insider Show, Grammar Girl’s Quick and Dirty Tips for Better Writing, NPR Hourly News Summary

  20. Tal Says:

Not WoW-related, but almost as awesome as TJ. And it’s available on iTunes:

  21. Ziv Says:

I just wrote about a bunch of podcasts that I listen to that helps me keep on top of WoW related things if you want to check it out (http://dblbbl.com/content/consuming-distilled-wotlk-beta-news). They’re also all available on iTunes for ease of adding it to your iPod.

On non-WoW related stuff I find that NPR Radio: Science Friday has some engaging topics.

  22. Fimlys Says:

Twisted Nether is definitely available on iTunes at: http://phobos.apple.com/WebObjects/MZStore.woa/wa/viewPodcast?id=281632764

(sorry for the annoying cryptic URL)..

I also agree with the above commenters that the Instance is great and also I listen to all the 1up podcasts (well, most of them)..

  23. Mira Says:

I pretty much only listen to wow ones so here are my favs.

Tavencast (when they release one. They used to be a warcraft podcast but now they just talk about stuff)
    The Instance

    Girly Ones:
    Epic Dolls
    Elunes Grace

Other Ones in order of preferance:
    Wow Insider
Twisting Nether (NEWISH and very good - contains the people behind the wow blogs)\
How I Wow (interesting interviews with people well known or maybe not so well known about themselves and their wow experiences)
    World of Warcast
    Wow Things Considered
    Blue Please (for his rants)
