Of Gear and Yarn Balls

Tuesday again, eh?

I suppose I could do an insightful look at talent points (eGADs don’t look at my current spec. I’m…uh…experimenting. And by ‘experimenting’, I mean ‘too lazy to do the research yet’.).

Maybe I could do a comparison of holy versus disc healing? How holy will still play footsies with the FSR, but disc will scorn spirit on gear?

Or maybe I could do an in-depth review of stats at higher levels! I could discuss how spirit is getting nerfed but isn’t useless by a long shot. Or how int is actually one of our major regen stats now if we can depend on replenishment in our raids?

Nope.

No, today, I am going to talk about yarn balls.

In Dalaran, there is a little building with a bunch of new mounts displayed outside. It’s a pet store. Go inside and talk to the little gnome who runs the joint. She sells stuff for your vanity pets. Something to make it sparkle, something to make it happy (complete with little heart bubble of joy), a leash that’s more irritating than not….

….and yarn balls.

That’s right.

You can play fetch with your vanity pets.

And let me be the first to say that the smolderweb spider hatchling pet looks incredibly adorable chasing after a ball of yarn and bringing it back to you in its mandibles. All it’s missing is a cute little jump and spin excitement combo.

…what? There’ll be plenty of time for insightful and useful posts on playing a healing priest. Later. For now, I’m still giddy over the sea cows. And the walrus people. And my obsession with getting a little baby penguin pet. Have you SEEN the anvils for blacksmithing in the walrus villages? They look like sushi! They ride turtles! WE ride turtles - boats back and forth from their villages. Their moustaches twitch when they’re preparing to fight.

I swear, that entire race and faction was created just for me. Naxx will have to wait. There are walruses to save!!

(Right, so maybe the quest where you toss wolvar puppies into a sack and hand them over every day is a smiiiiiidge on the creepy side. And maybe killing the leader of the wolvar and then bathing in his blood is closer to psychotic than adorable. Seriously. That stain’s never going to come out of my robe. Just think of the penguin, just think of the penguin….)

    Come on, nothing quite like some child snatching to prove you’re a hero.

  2. teh Khol Abides Says:

    One must also eat the heart of your enemy to really prove your worth. And to get their courage…their sweet, tasty courage…

    I understand that Northrend is all new and shiny and having fun is more important than toiling on research, but out of curiosity I scrolled back through your posts because I couldn’t remember tha last time you blogged about something useful. I got tired of scrolling =/ Still it doesn’t hurt me any to check and see if there is anything new to read. Have fun in Northrend.

  4. Wyndorfina Says:

    I love the posts, who cares about useful? WoW itself is gloriously, wonderfully useless. More stuff about yarn balls, penguins and wolf guts please :)

    @Underbridge
    Makes one sort of wonder why you keep coming back. In my experience, this is one of the best sites for useful information, if you just take the time to read the current and past posts. The Essential Ego is a great source of information on how to play the game better.

    If I didn’t like the site, I would go elsewhere.

    When it all comes down to the nutcuttin, this site belongs to Ego. I’m just glad her and the other staff take the time out of their days to share this with us. And if it becomes too big of a burden for us, or if we just don’t think she’s doing a very good job, let us just move on and not trash the authors of the articles.

    Want something useful? Try this:

    Hint: you are entitled to jack and shit. This is Vonya’s house, the rest of us are guests here, not paying customers. Be respectful or be gone. Don’t like it? Go piss up a tree.

    *ponders*

    I wonder if we can play fetch with Wolpertinger pets? I find the thought of watching a ball of yarn be thrown and float its way back to the owner rather amusing.

  8. Pen Says:

    Long time lurker piping up here just to add my voice to the crowd - the crankiness upthread is so saddening because its needlessly mean-spirited and unproductive. Hope it doesn’t get you down!

    I really enjoy your blog and have learned a lot from it - thanks a bunch. And with the expansion just released and everything still sorting itself out, I’m really enjoying your posts about enjoying the expansion. :) It’s exactly what I’m doing now, and will make a beeline over to Dalaran thanks to your post (I’m a knitter who collects vanity pets… holy mackerel).

    Anyone who figures they need a textbook in hand (researched, written, and published by someone else, of course) to enjoy this all is… really missing the point. =/

  9. Hildi Says:

    sheesh. I’m the hardcore one and now I have to go get a yarn ball. Without question, that will be the first thing I do after.

    @Vonya
    Yep, Walrus people ftw.

  10. Perrin Says:

    I’m still slightly disturbed by the fact that I’m playing cupid to lion seals (the correct blizz terminology :-p ), I mean yes they disappear and get a room, but this guy is getting it at least once a day, which is much more than I can say. Where’s the person to lead me to nookie with a tossed gamecard every day.

  11. Wyndorfina Says:

    @ Perrin

    That’s in the next expansion - but you’ll have to wait two years for it and you won’t believe how much you’ll need to upgrade your PC :)

  12. Chaninn Says:

    If you like the walrus people, go to the Dalaran sewers and find an Underbelly Elixer (I think that’s what it’s called). Drink it. One of the effects is to turn you into a Tuskar! Yup, you too can be a hungry Tuskar with +50 to fishing. :)

  13. Underbridge Says:

    Not sure how that came off as mean or demanding, perhaps I should replace “useful” with “Priestly” I have read all the past posts but mechanics have changed now and I started coming here to be a better healer. In todays age if you don’t ask, you wont get,(squeaky wheel and all that) I don’t “Require” anything in order to enjoy the game, I just like not missinforming people I talk to and the best way to do that is by talking to others with knowledge.

    Occasionally I had a difference of opinion on how to heal than was posted and said so, you didn’t jump on me then. Honestly I never noticed Vonya to be frail before so I think she could handle knowing that at least 1 reader was more interested in Priesting than in the novelty aspects of the game.

    If I am wrong and Hannelore is going to fill the Priest blog aspects of this site that is fine, maybe I am just confused about what this site is about now.

  14. Brajana Says:

    I understand that Northrend is new and exciting, and we are all pretty much learning. You can’t expect Vonya to be an expert on content that’s only been out for a week.

    I am super excited about the Penguin pet too! And they have some pretty Hunter rewards at Revered too, nice starter weapons like the Spear. Be sure to take a look at those. :) I also am looking forward to the Fishing pole! They seem to be quite easy to get rep with too, I’m already into revered!

  15. Hannelore Says:

    @Underbridge

    They’re still tweaking a lot of the specifics on some of the priest spells out in Northrend, plus gear is having a huge impact on things. Last I heard, Space Goat’s only replaced a couple pieces of her outfit.

    At this point, I would consider all her previous stuff to still be pretty accurate, with no real changes for her to speak of. Once she gets to a point where she and her cronies are in consistant gear and know which spells do what, I bet you’ll hear no end of the droning on and on about how and when to use Circle of Healing or something.

    Don’t count on me for that stuff. It wasn’t until yesterday that I realized I wasn’t going to eventually learn that spell. Apparently it’s for Holy Priests only. Elitists. Hmph.

  16. Tomo Says:

    Dear Mr. Underbridge,

    Do not feel like you are alone in having questions about how the expansion has/will affect the priestly class, I would dare say we all still had questions and that we are all (in our own ways) trying to discover these answers. I did not personally read your original post in a way that made it seem rude (and please don’t take mine to be rude or aggressive), but we, as the readers of this funny and awesomely informative blog, must remember that Vonya and the rest of the Ego Crew have many things going on in their own lives besides sedating their readers with intoxicating tidbits of knowledge. Vonya is still undergoing the grand challenge of trying to write an entire novel in just one month, and as she is 2/3rds of the way to her deadline, I believe she deserves some slack while undertaking such a hefty burden. In the times she is not at working at work, working at home, or working on her novel, she tries to fit in a little WoW time. Even with all that still pops in here to let us know she’s still alive and whatnot. I suggest to just try and have a little more patience, read the amusing posts while they’re still coming along, and enjoy the priestly posts that much more when when get back to them.

  17. Tomo Says:

    Bah, I dislike double posting, but I left out one of my main things. If you have questions on things that aren’t being addressed, try using that little “Email Us” link up at the top of the right side. I sent a couple and they were noted just a couple days later. Vonya checks her email and she will answer them as she gets time.

  18. Vendric Says:

    Ok, so there is a ball of yarn? I’m on the eastern coast trying to coax crap out of bats and you guys have fetch balls? btw, is the bat guano a slight Gygax homage, perhaps?

    So now I am really concerned. Most of my pets are flying fellows. They have no hands or claws to handle balls of yarn. The rocket bot has some hands, but the last time I sent him out a gnome in a trenchcoat tried to hug him.

    Can you do a fake throw just to confuse the pet? Can you throw it into a river? Can you throw it off a cliff? When I get my yarn I will be testing the cliff theory. Sorry, I just have to.

    ~V

  19. Phaedor Says:

    @ Underbridge
    I think a difference of opinion is valid, and many times both parties can learn something from the exchange, even if there is still a difference of opinion after discussing it. I certainly don’t think Vonya would be offended in the least with an honest enchange of opinions.

    What you stated in your original post was that Vonya’s posts were useless as far back as you cared to look, and this comes off as a slight to the author IMO. I honestly can’t imagine how you could take it any other way. But. from your second post, you may not have intended it this way. But you go on to state ‘I just like not missinforming people I talk to and the best way to do that is by talking to others with knowledge.’

    It seems like, you expect to be kept up on the latest information/opinions on how to heal. While Ego’s site does expound in many ways about how to be a good priest, it would be assuming much to think that’s their role with this site. I don’t want to assume the reason she has this site, but I would imagine it’s to write about the things she cares about and finds interesting.

    The issue may come from different attitudes about expectations. I’m sort of wandering around this site, and others, looking for little crumblets of information, along with grand epiphanies on the game, and every time I find them, I greedily scarf them up. Sharing insights on the game is a great part of the WoW community.

    One thing we can be sure of. Vonya didn’t start this site to keep Phaedor or Underbridge informed with the latest tips on WoW. I mean, think about it. We don’t have to log in or become a ‘member’ to access the articles. We get access to literally hundreds of articles, each written by someone with quite a bit of experience with this game, all for free. I think the more people that don’t understand this, the move likely the chances it won’t be here much longer, or possibly our IP’s will get blocked from accessing it. hehe

    @Vonya
    I very much appreciate your work on this site, and yours and your staffs articles. Thanks for putting forth the effort.

    @Ego
    I’m a big fan of this blog. I enjoy learning how others are enjoying WoW from the Ego crew point of view. I’m always engaged by the ‘Priestly’ posts even when I am in full agreement. There are other resources (thinking elitest jerks), but this blog is - bar none - the most fun. I have only one vanity pet - how could I avoid the bat from Kara - and may not play fetch with it for some time, but I think the yarn thing is imminently cool - and have you to thank for knowing about it.

    @Aensu
    Absolutely true. Absolutely uncalled for. Absolutely understandable that you’d defend Ego.

  21. Iratio Says:

    bah: “emminently cool”

  22. Iratio Says:

    /cry : “eminently cool”

  23. Hannelore Says:

    M&M-ly cool?

  24. Kwane Says:

    @Iratio

    You made me go and look it up! That doesnt happen all that often as I love etymology.
    em·i·nent - 1. Towering or standing out above others; prominent
    Hearing the word I would have thought of im·mi·nent.
    “because I know something you do not know. I am not left handed!”

    @Everyone
    We all love this place, the Ego-bar. Fisticuffs being past, shall we get back to just generally being merry?
    /group-hug

  25. teh Khol Abides Says:

    Egooooooooooo!!! Kwane’s touching meeeeeeeeeeee!!!

  26. Aensu Says:

    @Kwane

    I’m not really good at being merry. Can I just sit at the end of the bar and make mean glances? Everyone knows I’m mean spirited anyway. I promise I’ll stop biting people.

    Unless they aggro my group. I have one job on this lousy ship! It’s stupid, but I’m gonna do it!

  27. Kwane Says:

    @Aensu

    Would you rather be Shirley than Mary?

    Of course you can sit at the end of the bar.

    /slides a beer down the bar to Aensu

  28. Aensu Says:

    I’m too Harry to pull off being Shirley or Mary.

  29. Kitts Says:

    Priest gear at level 80 is hot.
