The Egotistical Priest

An irreverent and opinionated discussion of the many classes
in the World of Warcraft gaming universe.

Farewell, Old Girl

by Vonya
author is Vonya

I am officially closing the doors on The Egotistical Priest.

I’m sure this won’t come as much of a shock after the past few months of inactivity, but even I still held a glimmer of hope that the game would be revitalized after a period of time off.

It did not. I haven’t logged into WoW since the post where I mentioned I was taking a break.

It does no good for a blogger who no longer plays a game to continue and offer articles regarding it. More and more, I’d become that old biddy sitting on her front porch, sipping lemonade and cackling to herself about the good old days (and yelling at the neighbors kids to get off my lawn).

I will post the contest prizes here, and then have one final capstone post to indicate that the blog is truly dead. If you’d like to stick around long enough to see the prizes, you’re more than welcome, but there will be no further World of Warcraft theorycraft or gaming posts.

I will always remember WoW with fondness. We can complain about the drama and the loot-whoring till the Tauren come home, but that’s like complaining about mosquitoes on a camping trip. We camp despite the mosquitoes. And we play WoW despite the drama.

We play WoW for the camaraderie. We play it for the sense of accomplishment. We play it to help others, to relax, or to join our forces with our compatriots and defeat a mighty enemy.

Warcraft is more than a game. It’s more than just pixels on a screen, more than just fifteen dollars a month.

I may not play the game anymore (or if I pick it back up, I may never return to blogging about it) but I will always, till the day I die, consider myself a WoW Player. That title will always be a point of pride for me.

This was in some ways an easy decision – if I’m not playing the game, how can I reliably blog about it? – but in other ways it was incredibly difficult. One difficult decision for each and every single person who watches or comments on the blog. You guys truly are the absolute readership a blogger could ever hope for. In all the years that Ego has been going strong, I’ve had less than a handful of true trollish behavior, which is astounding for any blog.

You encouraged and educated each other (and me!). You are the true heart of Egotistical Priest, and I hope that all of you feel the same pride in what we have accomplished here that I do.

The blog may be closed, but the spirit of Ego lives on.

Farewell, Old Girl. It’s been a great ride.

Sorry to see you go. Thanks for all the stories!

  2. Kestrel Says:

    *cry*

Even though I knew this was coming…*sigh*. As you know, yours was one of the first Priest blogs I read that helped me become the pretty decent raiding priest I am today. And of course, this site was the genesis of a wonderful friendship. While I know we’ll talk in other venues, I’ll miss Ego. A lot.

    *huge hugs*

    Farewell Vonya !

You were one of the first blogs I read along with BRK’s and Phaelia’s one. I now have a very long blogroll but you and a few others gave me the motivation to write my own thoughts on my own blog, instead of just commenting on other’s blogs.

Thanks again for everything you did for the wowblogging community.

  4. Cozy Says:

    Awww… this makes me sad.

I’m relatively new to Egotistical Priest, but always loved reading it. Good luck to you in all you do!

  9. Grimmtooth Says:

I knew this was coming but it still makes me sad to see you go. Thank you for all the wonderful articles. My little priest thanks you, too. Best of luck to you with your new adventures!

[...] it’s official; Vonya and Hannelore are leaving us for real. Ego’s been one of the classier stops for healing theorycrafting and humor. I almost lost it [...]

  11. Middea Says:

Any idea what yall will be playing in the future if anything?

  12. Iris Says:

I am sorry to see you go from the WoW scene, you were one of my favourite bloggers… But I have a few other places to follow you, so while I will miss Vonya, I have no plans on missing Tami

Cheers, and see you on the other end of the rainbow

  13. Ayslin Says:

You are the first blog I had ever read…of any kind. All my research into my class of choice started with you. Well before you there was Official forums….ummmm ewwww. Anyhow…I’m going to miss you. You are a very big part of who I play and how I play. You may not have known what an influence you were to me…or maybe not even know who I am.

For me all of my blogs, and other WoW related sites, started here with you. It started by reading everything you had written and then finding a hunger for more. I then started clicking through all your links and from those sites yet others, but it all comes back her to you.

    Thank You so much.

  14. Yuka Says:

    Here’s one for you Ego.

    Gobble gobble.

  17. Dechion Says:

    Another light goes out.

I can almost feel the nether closing in about me as one after another of the writers who inspired me to blog in the first place close their doors and move along.

Makes me wonder how long it will be before I join them.

Fare the well Ego, you and the characters you created, will be missed.

  18. Gnomeaggedon Says:

    You will be missed…

    Enjoy the RL!

  19. Zahrah Says:

Awee…. there was always going to be a glimmer of hope..
Will miss your blogs – and wish you well with what you do next :)

  20. Snow Says:

    Sadness abounds Miss Priest.

Though all the signs sort of pointed to this direction, there really was that little glimmer of hope that you’d come back revitalized to reclaim your home.

    Wishing you well!

  21. Lifedeathsoul Says:

    Hail and farewell Hannelore/Vonyari *bow*

Too late, I have come to realise the joy of reading WoW Blogs, and I entered at a time when all the great bloggers are leaving.

Wishing you well, and may all your hopes and dreams come true :)

  22. Jilliene Says:

*sniff* Bye Ego.. I’ve been reading your blog for a long time and it’ll be missed!

  23. Larísa Says:

“I will always, till the day I die, consider myself a WoW Player. ”
    This is indeed true.

I haven’t published an SF fanzine in 20 years. Still I consider myself a member of the SF fanzine movement called “Fandom”. It’s a part of who I am, just as WoW playing and WoW blogging is another part.

I don’t know you at all – and yet somehow I do. We’re like water drops floating around in the same ocean, sharing the same fantasy of a different world.

One by one we hear the call and know that it’s our turn to enter the ship and cross the ocean. One day it will be I who will write a farewell post – although it won’t be nearly as beautiful and touching as yours.

Oh, I’m just rambling. What I really wanted to say was: thank you for all that you’ve given the community and good luck in real life!

  24. Misamane Says:

I’ll save my long post for the “capstone” post, but I’m very, very sad.

We all love you, Vonya! Just don’t give the blog to Hanners ;)

  25. Jov Says:

Much love to you. Your support was vital in keeping us going (must.keep.writing.we’re.on.blogrolls.zomg) and your presence will be missed.

That being said, don’t be a stranger. :)

  26. Juzaba Says:

Thanks for the help and inspiration. I’ve said it elsewhere, so I’ll say it again: Ego was the catalyst that brought the game to a new level of enjoyment for me. And I still think your post arguing that it is good to be egotistical is one of the best posts in the blogosphere.

Best of luck in all future endeavors!

  27. teh Khol Abides Says:

I wish I could say I didn’t see this coming, but the “break” inevitably leads to being done. That said, I do have to express my thanks and appreciation for the work and inspiration that Vonya and the Ego team provided. A Stab in the Dark wouldn’t exist, if not for Vonya (also Ratshag, but mostly Vonya.)

Whatever you choose to do next, I wish you the best and all the success you’ve had here and more.

    Thank you, always,

    Khol

  28. Juergen Says:

I am sad to see you, this blog was at the top of my WoW blog list.

I liked the theory posts about the priest skills in regard to healing; loved the way characters were portrayed in the stories; the occasional guest post added some spice. And I loved Hannelore’s attitude, oh yes :) “Spacegoat” is a part of my vocabulary now. All in all it was a very enjoyable mix of themes.

Best wishes from me for your future endeavors.

  29. Sissadora Says:

I can’t thank you enough for creating this blog in the first place!

I’ve laughed and cried at things you’ve written and overall, learned so much about this game and the people in it. Because of you I learned that not all the wipes were my fault, alongside many other important things I need to keep in mind during our everyday raids.

As a fellow priest and a roleplayer (before I changed server that is) I have to salute you and stalk your deviantART account!

    Again, thank you :)

  30. MrMighty Says:

Thanks for everything. I’ve thoroughly enjoyed all the posts here during the time I’ve followed you.

  31. Hildi Says:

    :(
It’s been a good ride tho.

  32. Ess Says:

Thanks for everything — yours was one of the first wow blogs I discovered, too. I’ll miss seeing you around.

Best of luck to you in all you do! :)

  33. Vendric Says:

You are an excellent writer and creator. Your future endeavors will be fortunate to have you.

Like many have said, I found this by accident before I really knew that a blog was a noun. Much of the information here should be required reading for all players of any universe.

May all your dawns be silver!
    ~V

  34. AShadowPriest Says:

I enjoyed reading your stories, and I’m sorry to see you go.

Here’s to hoping you find another universe that captivates you as WoW did.

  35. ByStander Says:

Another one bite the dust ,
i guess wow just not interesting enough anymore for all these leet bloggers
sad to see them leave one after another
I guess it time to Jam some Heroes of Newerth~~!!! bye all

  36. David Says:

A shame for sure. It’s always hard to see another great blogger go. Especially when I, myself, have doubts about my enjoyment in this game. Unfortunately, there simply is no other good MMO on the market right now for me.

But I digress. Good luck to you and thank you for this blog.

  37. Dave Says:

….(yelling at the neighbors kids to get off my lawn).”

That a lot better than my neighbor who threw rocks at motorcyclists.

Thanks for doing what you did. You were a regular stop on my web surfing routine for a long time and I enjoyed all of it.

  38. squeeky Says:

    hehe…37

Well, all’s well that end’s well. I’ll be seein you…in all the old familiar places . . .

  39. Closure Says:

Thank you for each and every post from team Ego.

Please do not take Ego off the web – I still refer to some of your educational posts once in a while.

P.S. Your spot in my feedreader will always be reserved, just saying :)

  40. Ohnoimdead Says:

Bummer. I just started playing a priest and found this blog and was like: cool! Now I’m sad.
